Joplin Public Schools FEMA Safe Rooms

After the devastating twister that rocked the city of Joplin, Missouri, in 2011, the Joplin Public Schools set out to provide safe places for students, teachers and staff, and community members to take shelter during the violent storms seen too often in this region. The district hired Nabholz to construct 10 FEMA safe rooms and connecting corridors, perform various upgrades for ADA and Life Safety Code compliance, and renovate a number of classrooms. Safe rooms were constructed at the following locations throughout the district:

  • Cecil Floyd Elementary School
  • Royal Heights Elementary School
  • Stapleton Elementary School
  • Eastmorland Elementary School
  • Duenweg Elementary School
  • Jefferson Elementary School
  • West Central Elementary School
  • McKinley Elementary School
  • Junge Stadium
  • Kelsey Norman Elementary School
